Our Evolutionary Imperative

 The End of Accidental Evolution

Human beings are now the most conscious creatures on Earth, without a doubt. However, it seems that our evolution has come to a halt. Even though our potential has not yet been realized, we are no longer developing biologically, because it seems that there will be no more evolution without conscious evolution, as said by Robert Ornstein in his book The Evolution of Consciousness.[1] The evolution of human beings has always been determined by nature, and our species has shaped itself to meet our needs as best as it could. The seemingly endless process of accidental evolution has now come to a stop, leaving it up to us to do the rest.[2] That is not to say that we should, say, mutate our genes to try and improve ourselves biologically; it is our consciousness that needs to evolve. Certain individuals throughout history have developed themselves to higher states of consciousness, experiencing the true nature of the self, and many more have shown that human consciousness is capable of psychic powers. These people are examples of the potential of consciousness; they are examples of what each one of us should strive to achieve. They are human beings just like us, biologically identical, and each one of us is capable of developing our consciousness in the way that they have.

Conscious Enlightenment and the Mayan Prophecy

Many cultures have different names, processes and rituals of this conscious evolution. According to Hindu teachings, it is called “satchitananda”; “sat” meaning truth, “chit” meaning consciousness, and “ananda” meaning bliss.[3] In Indian philosophy, it is called “Samadhi”, meaning “still mind”.[4] It could also be related to apotheosis, the transforming of man into a godlike being. The Mayans came up with an entire cyclic calendar, consisting of nine stages of consciousness, each one representing an era dominated by a particular Underworld, to predict the exact date that the cycle would end; October 28, 2011.[5] They built pyramids with nine levels, each one shorter than the previous one, to represent these Underworlds being built on top of each other. We are currently in the eighth stage, the Galactic stage, and coming up on the last stage, the Universal stage, which starts on March 3, 2011. On December 21, 2012 their World Time calendar, which lasts 5125 years, is also ending, marking the end of the fifth and last cycle of the galactic day, which lasts 25’625 years, and marking the beginning of a new galactic day.[6] All of these events are causing a widespread belief that 2012 will bring a cataclysm or an apocalypse. However, nobody really knows what exactly the Mayans were predicting; whether it was an apocalypse, an enlightenment of mankind’s consciousness, or something else. All we know is that we will supposedly be “reborn” in some way. But if this was true, why would mankind suddenly be collectively enlightened or destroyed as we reach the end of this calendar? The answer might lie in the Yin Yang polarity of the Underworlds. Each Underworld brings a certain polarity, which has a crucial influence on human consciousness. During the sixth stage, the National Underworld, the light was polarized between the two brain hemispheres so that the left hemisphere was favored.[7] As a result, human beings came to feel incomplete and lesser than divine, which strongly hindered the process toward enlightenment, which has been extremely rare or even non-existent during the last 5000 years. It was during this era, and even more so in the next stage, the Planetary Underworld, when light shifted to the back of the brain and human beings experienced a darkened consciousness that strengthened our egos, that we started to feel a need to reinforce our own identity.[8] Our feeling of incompleteness caused us to feel a need to build up a stronger identity around ourselves, and we did this by looking to the possession of things. We started developing an artificial sense of self to compensate for our incompleteness, and so the need for the production and consumption of things increased hugely.[9] The Galactic Underworld, which began in 1999, brought a polarity which favored the right side of the brain, and during the Universal Underworld, starting 2011, the light will shift to the front side of the brain, and the polarities of these four Underworlds will add up to form a sphere of light.[10] The fact that this era is dominated by a light on the front of the brain is also important, because it has been claimed that a vital prerequisite for a person’s enlightenment is that the activity of the parietal lobes in the back of the brain is shifted to take place in the frontal lobes, and that such light will help to do so.[11] According to the Mayans, our evolutionary imperative is therefore to use that unique state of light in our brains, and bring about that shift to the frontal lobes and enlighten ourselves.

Our Evolutionary Imperative

Why exactly is it imperative that we bring ourselves to this higher state of consciousness? Because it might just solve all of our global problems. Many crises in the world stem from egocentricity, which is something that developed during the Planetary Underworld. With the coming of the new Underworld and therefore the enlightenment of individuals around the world, we might awaken to see what really matters. Right now, when we recognize that the world is in danger because of over-exploitation, global warming, deforestation, desertification, nuclear proliferation, air and water pollution, and a lot more, we still fail to take satisfactory remedial action. All of those problems stem from selfishness and greed in some way, and the fact that we continue to drive our cars, consume dwindling resources, and throw our waste into the sea, shows that we are still selfish, because even though we know we shouldn’t, to do otherwise would inconvenience ourselves.[12] The global crisis that we are now facing is thus essentially a crisis of consciousness. Our consciousness’ present way of functioning is no longer appropriate and adequate for the world we live in, and therefore it is necessary that we evolve into beings with a new level of consciousness, that we make the step that many saints, mystics and others have already made. No matter what theories we believe, we should all strive to get to that enlightened state in one way or another. Only time will tell whether the Mayans were right, but I, for one, do believe that we will need to make this crucial step in the near future. Free from self-centeredness, relieved of unnecessary fears, and free from the need to create an artificial sense of identity, we will be able to focus fully on the things that really matter. We will be able to fulfill the true needs of ourselves, the environment, and everything we share it with. And in that state, we will be in a much better position to solve our crises and problems, and build a better world. It is our evolutionary imperative to enlighten ourselves so that we will be able to manifest all those essential changes to our world, for our own sakes and for the sake of everything else on earth.
